Intro - Who am I?

Wonder the World, Hyungjun Cho

Self introduction

Hyungjun Cho

It's always quite frustrating to introduce myself to someone else.
Not just because I'm shy with strangers, but also because it's quite hard for me to fully comprehend who I am.
Do my achievements describe who I am? Or is it my characteristics that define me?
No phrase can fully describe myself even in a nutshell.
So let's start with "Hey, nice to meet you. I'm Hyungjun Cho."

ME?

I'll begin my introduction building up from the small stuffs.

I am an extroverted, enthusiastic and (struggling to be) altruistic person who suffers from self-contradiction by the introverted, frustrating and egoistic aspects of mine.

I am a 26 years old sophomore student studying Information · Interactive Design in Yonsei university.
Though my major emphasizes on UI and UX design, I wandered off into a path of filmmaking.

BEFORE UNIVERSITY

Until I turned 10, I was that ‘freaky nerd in every classroom.’
I loved reading books. When I mean love, I mean LOVE.
I read in bed, at the dining table, on the car and even on the walk.
The amount of books I read in a month at that time would easily beat the amount of books I read after getting into university (it’s a shame).
My library of knowledge grew bigger and bigger while the public relations department was left rather abandoned.
Only interaction being made with books that could only talk but not listen, I was very clumsy at talking to others and empathize with them.
My chapter of life started to flip on the plane to the United States on the summer of 2005.
Truth be told, I sucked at English.
I even confused ‘b’ with ‘d’ and misspelled my English name as ‘bavib’ (didn’t even Capitalize the first letter!)
Being English-mute and introverted, I had a hard time for the first 6 months.
But the warm-hearted friends I met encouraged me to burst out of my shell and give it a shot.
I slowly started to express myself in English, and it not only enhanced my English skills but also brought about a huge change to my personality.
After another 6 months, I came back to Korea and I had become that ‘ordinary ENFP guy in every classroom.’
My public relations department expanded rapidly with employees that were laid off from the library.
Then, my middle school and high school were just like every other students in Korea - studying, burning out and studying again.
Then I got admitted into Yonsei University and my life turned into a third chapter.

FILMMAKING

Ah, yes.
This is a big part of my life that cannot go unexplained when introducing myself.

When I was a freshman, I wanted to work in a video game company, so I originally wanted to learn programming and developing softwares.

A twist of fate led me - no background knowledge, no interest or whatsoever - to taking a filmmaking course with my roommate.

My roommate, Yohan Jeong, a CTM student of Creative Technology Management, is such a passionate man who could dare founding a video production in our freshman year.

Raised in a classic Korean education curriculum, I didn't believe it would work out.
But his passion overpowered my pessimism and encouraged me to join as a founding member.

That's when the 'Wonderwood Production' was born

We just started off as a student team of 3 members, making exhibit competition videos or small student films.

Things shifted in the fall of 2016, when we took over the 'Yonko Hiphop diss-rap battle.'

2 videos made by 7 students with a budget of \320,000 got viral on Youtube and Facebook, getting over a million views in 3 months.
I was overwhelmed by the love and support from the viewers, encouraging myself to strive further.

After a year of hard work, experience and practicing, came out the 'Killitkomori,' a 2017 Korea University's diss-rap video on Yonsei University.
It became a phenomenon over social media - over a million views on Youtube in just 2 weeks, getting on the Top 100 chart in music streaming services and being introduced on several hiphop Facebook pages and Youtube channels.

This thrilling experience was the moment I chose filmmaking as my career.

It has been about 5 years since I have been into filmmaking and have gone through about 50 projects and an internship program.

Now I am capable of dealing with Adobe Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects and Blackmagic Design Davinci Resolve.

WHO I WILL BE

I like being involved in a creative process.
I love squeezing my brain out to surf through references, search for options, make decisions, actualize the idea and evaluating the outcome.
Filmmaking is one of the work that suits this condition.
But just like filmmaking was never an option in my life until my sophomore year, I will be open to any options and knowledges to come.
So I plan on learning various areas like UI / UX design, HCI, coding, etc. to later combine with my filmmaking skills to create a new value.
I also will keep playing games, which is my hobby, to constantly experience how a contents developer interacts with the user and enlighten them in a creative way.

Therefore, I wish to learn how to analyze a program or a service, process by process and how each process consists of subprocesses.
Hence, will I be able to reverse engineer the analyzing process and apply it to any creative achievements I will make in the future.

And with my creative work, I wish to influence the people who experienced it in a good way and make their life and the world be better.

So well, I think that pretty much explains a nutshell of me.
I wish to upload a variety of posts later on and hopefully one day hear about your story as well.
Thanks for reading.
